Russia vs Georgia
Yes this is the obligatory Oliver Chapman-Dainty rant based on half heard rumours and dubious political knowledge but please, give it a chance?
The whole Georgian insurgent-quashing mission in the breakaway South Osseta region thing. Don’t you just love the Russian response? Typically as a “peacekeeping” force you’d imagine at worst they’d push the Georgians out of South Osseta and that would be that.
Alas we now have them blockading Georgias largest port city and making airstrikes within the country itself on civilian targets like power stations and the international airport. There are even reports that they are targeting the only non Russian controlled oil pipeline that goes into the European Union.
Not that Russia would want to have a complete monopoly over something like 60% of European energy use or anything.
Call me a cynic - and god I hate writing about conspiracy theories on my blog (is there ANY worse use for the internet?) but considering that Russia has been arming the South Ossetans (?) since the breakup of the Soviet Union doesn’t the whole conflict seem like a bit of a land grab by the Russians?
